Manos Markantonis

Manos Markantonis (b.1984) is a Greek composer. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from Trinity College Dublin, School of Creative Arts, supervised by Dr. Evangelia Rigaki.

He received his B.M. in Theory and Composition from Hellenic American University and his M.Phil. in Composition from Trinity College Dublin, as well as a Composition Diploma from the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts having studied alongside Prof. Theodore Antoniou. He has also attended the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt (IMD).

He holds Harmony, Counterpoint and Fugue Diplomas, having studied alongside Vicky Gerahi, at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music & Arts, as well as the Electronic Organ Diploma of Yamaha Music Foundation, having studied alongside Leonidas Fassaros, at the Nakas Conservatory.

His interests are mainly focused on contemporary classical music composition, experimental music theatre, scoring for documentaries, academic research and music teaching. He is also interested in acousmatic composition, electronic music production, computer-aided synthesis, complementary to visual content and multimedia.

In 2014, he was selected to participate in the Young Greek Composer’s Workshops, organised by the Greek Composer’s Union at the Athens Concert Hall, featuring his work Genesis for chamber ensemble, performed by the Hellenic Ensemble of Contemporary Music. In 2015, he was commissioned with an original composition by the International Young Composers’ workshop. The work, titled Terra Incognita (2015), was performed by the Alea III Contemporary Ensemble at the Tsai Performance Center in Boston University. Soon thereafter, Contemplation (2016) for Solo Piano was performed at the Athens Hellenic American Union Auditorium. Ιn 2017, his String Quartet No. 2 (2016) was premiered in Athens by L’Anima String Quartet and his composition Abstract Sketches for Clarinet and Guitar (2017) was performed at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall during the 8th Contemporary Music Lab. In 2018, his Brass Quintet (2012) was premiered by the Metallon Quintet – Brass & Percussion Ensemble of the Athens State Orchestra. In 2019, his work Music for an Imaginary Painting (2019) was performed by the Parabasis Ensemble at the National Concert Hall Dublin. The same year, the historical documentary 100 years of GSEVEE with his original soundtrack premiered at the Olympion Movie Theater in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 2021, he was commissioned to compose and produce the music for the titles of the 16-episode documentary series entitled “Diaspora – Communities – Benefactors: From me to we” – created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution – for the state-owned public radio and television broadcaster of Greece, ERT.

In the recent past, he has worked as an orchestrator in numerous television and music productions, with Mabrida Studios in Athens.
